So today I was given the challenge to write poetry, something I haven't written since grade school when we were required to do for class. I never enjoyed poetry reading or writing mostly because I found it boring, but alas the point of this blog is to challenge each other with different prompts and Sean thought it would be good to test my ability to write a poem. I decided to write five. Bring it on!
Poetry is something I’m
not proud to do.
Mostly because it’s hard
to me,
but maybe not to you.
This is a simple poem
to test my skills.
It structure maybe be
simple,
and its rhymes will not
send you chills.
The idea was Sean’s,
not mine.
And if he asks me to do
this again,
I’ll be sure to commit
the perfect crime.
Alright, that wasn't too bad, sure the rhythm wasn't perfect but at least it rhymed, isn't that what poetry is all about anyways? But Sean did mention to me to focus on word economy, and what better way to test it than a haiku? So I give you my first haiku trilogy: The Haikus of Science!
Science is awesome,
Science is discovery.
Science is moving.
Bang, smash, clash and
flash!
Hydrogen atoms collide.
Helium is formed.
The planets orbit,
The sun pulls strongly
inwards.
Gravity rules all.
Alright I got this, poetry isn't too hard after all, it just takes some knowledge on syllabus and what words rhyme and don't rhyme (I'm looking at you purple). One more poem to go, what should I write? I like traveling a lot, that should do.
I travel long and far,
Through plane, boat and
car.
My world view changes,
Through ideas and
cultural exchanges.
I see sights I thought
I’d never see.
Mountians stretching
from sea to sea.
I wish I could never go
home.
I still have the whole
world to roam.
I got this, I can now write simple poetry. Bring it on!
